Mr. & Mrs. Smith

"At the end, you can only think of the beginning."

Such a simple line uttered by John Smith (Brad Pitt) to her wife, Jane Smith (Angelina Jolie) in one of the car-chase scenes in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, which is plainly uttered in a regular manner as what Pitt usually does, turns out to be some slipped subtlety we might wonder here.

Is this really the end of Hollywood glamorous era?

Never before in recent releases a film is capitalized on the glitz presence of its leading actors who are portrayed as what and how their images are projected off-screen.
Never before in recent releases that a film charms its audience for the sake of the actors who do not act to be on their own easily.
The latter point might bring the fact that, as hesitant as it might be, never before in recent releases that a film is perfectly cast.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Yet, if we look back at the old Hollywood days when scriptswriters are masters and directors are kings in putting their signatural marks on witty and smart scripts, this kind of practice had been done in the early years of the century.
People flocked to see Cary Grant doing the best impersonation of himself, to be seduced by Marilyn Monroe in whatever film she was in, and this topic will not complete without mentioning the legendary pairings of Katharine Hepburn-Spencer Tracy and Lauren Bacall-Humphrey Bogart. A consummate thespian on their own, when they were paired, audience saw the chemistry between each couple as the result of what their projected images off-screen were: Hepburn, a strong willed lady to be charmed by Tracy's gentleness and patience, and Bacall as a debonaire, mysterious lady to be melt by Bogart's rough-yet-tender sensitive old guy.

It might be way early to place Pitt and Jolie alongside the legends, but judging from their banterings and unspeakable ease of performing to and for each other, we can't help but smiling all through the entire duration of 110 minutes without even at once bothering about illogical plots. This is a well packaged summer blockbuster film: explosive action, gorgeous cast that even looks larger-than-life thanks to nicely done shot that seem to make both of them being ripped off from any glossy fashion magazine, and the wits spoken convincingly as if we really see Pitt and Jolie have been performing together for a number of times.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith

To think that the whole film relies on its own star presence is surely a reminiscence of the good glorious old Hollywood days, which leads us thinking how star powers these days are being set aside, making a way for mindless CGI effects. The film might not be the best for its own genre, but to keep the treatment from dying completely, it is sure an applaudable effort.

I HATE YOU!

Oh how I'm dying to watch Mr. & Mrs. Smith and I'm not sure if I can catch the movie in the nearest theatre asap.

Truthfully, this movie's already intrigued me since Jennie divorced Pitt after (how long? 4? 5?) years of marriage. I mean, their lovemaking scene must be so convincing, huh? Huh? And who can't resist the (hopefully) chemistry between these 100 most beautiful PEOPLE? I know I can't.

Girl,
your anger should've been directed towards angelina jolie instead :) and thanks to 21cineplex.com for the information, the film was shown as "midnight show" over the last weekend.

there won't be a trace of grey area in judging this film, you'll be thrown to the utmost extreme of opposing sides: like it or loathe it.
guess i shall wait for your piece then ;)

Jaka,
good choices for "throwing-two-birds-with-one-stone" moment :)

and you might put the word "aspiring" prior to the compliment, thank you very much indeed :)

whereas meg ryan undeniably excels in romantic comedies, she only manages to sizzle in them by getting paired with male actors who can be on the same par or above her quirkiness, or in other words, when we see meg ryan carrying a film by herself, we are not convinced on her capability of doing so, and indeed, hardly anyone recall 'in the cut' as a good flick.

btw, val kilmer and mira sorvino acted together in "at first sight", which IMHO is another vehicle for actors not used to act in romantic comedies or dramas yet wanting to take a dip into one, only to find themselves fizzled inside, leaving no chemistry behind (think of matthew mcconaughey in 'wedding planner' or ralph fiennes, God pardon him, in 'maid in manhattan'. yes, j.lo brings the lows to those fine actors).

dearie, how can you forget kate winslet?

... in relation to Jaka's favourite couples, I'll jump in the crowd with mine:

1. Julie Delphy & Ethan Hawke (Before Sunset/ Sunrise -- which one's the prequel?)

2. Jack Nicholson & Helen Hunt (As Good As It Gets)

3. Jack Nicholson & Diane Keaton (Something Gotta Give)

4. Rene Zelwegger & Colin Firth (Bridget Jones's Diary -- the first movie, not the sequel)

5. Sean Penn & Naomi Watts (21 Grams)

My choice's maybe seem too absurd for some peeps, but at least my most fave -- Delphy & Hawke -- is much more something than some couple from those romantic-comedy wannabes.

Val,
the stone was thrown to me actually
he he he....

Come to think of it, I dont recall ever seeing Meg Ryan play other than a drama flick.... Has she ever?

Maybe we should give her a chance :)

Although it would be a bit hard to imagine a great chemistry happenning with her playing opposite of Sean Penn in She's so Lovely or side by side with Al Pacino in Casino,

but some actress simply excells in one category while some others may excells in many...

This coming from a bloke that Meg has cheered up more than a couple of times :)))

How bout these couples:

like girl pointed out:
Nicholson & Keaton: Yessss!!!!

Pitt & Sarandon: Thelma & Louise

Grossler and the girl in The Notebook, I'm really bad with names :(

Cuzzack & whats her name in Serendipity hmmmmm.....

Thank you for pointing out Kate Winslett he he he.....
